» Batalha pilot demonstrator goals

The pilot demonstrator will be installed by EDP in Batalha, Portugal. It comprises two secondary substations.

One of the secondary substations serves a LV 3-phase feeder. This LV circuit has five overhead segments, where PV micro-generation installations are also present. A set of five 3-phase sensors featuring "last gasp" provides grid monitoring capabilities under contingency or faulty conditions.
The main features are fault detection and location, as well as power flow and voltage cognition. Grid value snapshots comprising voltage disturbances and upper limit violations, arising from micro-generation conditions, will be replicated in laboratory for assessing and validating voltage regulation distributed control algorithms.
The other secondary substation serves a LV 3-phase feeder. This LV circuit has three underground segments and one overhead segment. A set of four 3-phase sensors perform similarly as those mentioned above. This secondary substation also serves two public lighting (PL) circuits comprising eight single-phase sensors performing similarly as those mentioned above.
The main features are fault detection and location, as well as power flow and voltage cognition at both LV and PL circuits. Besides, faulty light bulbs detection and location are main features as well.

In both cases, each secondary substation’s gateway communicates with the sensors via an IEEE 802.15.4 compliant narrowband RF Mesh network. The gateway communicates with the secondary substation master controller (the Distribution Transformer Controller) via Ethernet. DLMS/COSEM completes all protocol stacks.

Besides the field demonstrators to be deployed in Batalha, a laboratorial demonstrator is also foreseen – the DemoLab.
The DemoLab will allow the R&D team to test the main features in the laboratory, namely the voltage regulation algorithms, which cannot be deployed in the field, due to regulatory terms, as PV micro-generation assets cannot be prevented to inject energy under any circumstances.
